We often want change to begin somewhere else.

With the system.

With the organization.

With the culture.

With the team.

With the room.

With the relationship.

With them.

Sometimes change is needed there.

Systems need to be challenged.

Organizations need to repair what they have ignored.

Cultures need to examine what they reward and what they excuse.

Teams need to take more ownership.

Rooms need more honesty.

Relationships need clearer communication.

People need to change.

That truth stands.

It is not the whole truth.

It is easy to begin with what other people are doing wrong.

They are not listening.

They are not showing up.

They are not following through.

They are not respecting boundaries.

They are not communicating clearly.

Maybe all of that is true.

When the entire story begins and ends with they, we risk giving away our power.

Because if the only way things can change is for someone else to change first, then our next move depends on their willingness.

Their awareness.

Their timing.

Their courage.

Their readiness.

That can become a long wait.

Some of us have been waiting a very long time.

Waiting for clarity that never came.

Waiting for the apology that never arrived.

Waiting for things to get better on their own.

Waiting for someone else to go first.

The wait has a cost. It costs you time. It costs you energy.

It costs you the decisions only you can make.

Starting with I does not end the wait by changing them.

It ends the wait by returning the next move to you.

It means refusing to disappear from your own story.

It means asking:

What is mine here?

What have I not said?

What have I said too many times without action?

What boundary have I named yet not honored?

What pattern have I adapted to so well that I now call it normal?

What am I hoping will change while I continue to participate in the same way?

Those questions are not always comfortable.

They are not meant to be.

They ask only one thing. Responsibility for self.

More personal. More uncomfortable. More powerful.

I.

I need to pause.

I need to listen differently.

I need to stop explaining away what I already know.

I need to be honest about what I keep tolerating.

I need to name what I have been avoiding.

I need to own the difference between what I say I want and what I continue to allow.

That is power. Quiet power. Grounded power.

I can tell the truth without attacking myself.

I can acknowledge my part without carrying what belongs to someone else.

I can learn from what happened without making my humanity the problem.

That is claiming.

Not shrinking.

Not absorbing.

Not disappearing.

Claiming.

Where clarity begins.

Where choice begins.

Where your power lives.

Start with I.

What is starting with I asking of you right now?
